Check out my post on Baul Dada’s Jhal Muri ‘Shop’
After another hectic week at work and school, today was one of those quiet kind of Saturdays where I don’t feel like doing much but relax, have some jhal muri, some chai, and read a good book just because I want to and not because the professor told me to (I’m currently reading The Hobbit if any of you are curious).
- half of a medium tomato (diced)
- half of a medium red onion (diced)
- a handful of coriander leaves (minced)
- 2 small chili peppers (minced)
- 1/4 cup of minced ginger
- a slice of lemon (for its juice and then mince)
- 3 cups of puffed rice
- 1 cup of Bombay mix
- 1 cup of cooked garbanzo beans
- 3 tbsp of mustard oil
- a dash of table salt
- a dash of Himalayan salt
- Mix everything in a bowl!
Well technically it’s not really a shop but if you’ve been to Curry Central a/k/a Jackson Heights, then you might have seen an old fellow sitting in front of Haat Bazar with his little jhal muri stand on 73rd Street. I call 73rd Street Little Dhaka because that block just reminds me of the streets of Dhaka: its congested traffic, many bazars, Bengali restaurants, music stores, and clothing stores. What is jhal muri you ask? It’s a favorite Bengali snack that doesn’t require a stove! All you need are some freshly diced onions, ginger, cilantro, tomatoes, chili peppers, lemon juice, mustard oil, muri (puffed rice), chanachur (Bombay mix), and some good quality chaat masala powder (Optional: chola bhaji, a dish using black chickpeas). As Baul Dada prepares a mix of jhul muri for his customers, he typically sings Bengali folk songs. His singing and the jhal muri he makes with his own masala mix is so unique; it truly does give me a nostalgic feeling of my time in Sylhet, Bangladesh, which is why I think I go back to his stand over and over again.
